Midweek meditation

Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.                                              Matthew 14:28-29

We have heard this story so many times. The disciples went out on the boat while Jesus stayed on shore to pray. Just before dawn, Jesus walks across the water to join them. They are afraid and think he is a ghost at first. After Jesus speaks, Peter calls out essentially, if it’s really you, prove it
Jesus calls Peter to come and for a few steps Peter actually walks on the water. Then his focus drifts to the wind and waves and he begins to sink. “Lord, save me!”

Peter is surely every one of us. How often do we repeat this process in our lives? First fear. We call for Jesus. We want reassurance, proof that he really is carrying us. He tells us to live our faith and we will be sure. We succeed until the things of this world distract us and pull us back into fear.

Jesus is always with us, telling us that we have no need to fear. Telling us we can do miracles in his name. Calling us to greater faith.

Too often we forget to listen until weather gets stormy. We need to work at hearing his voice and responding to his will in times of calm. So in stormy times, we have the strong conviction that no matter what the world throws at us, we are His and nothing can pull us under the water. “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”(Matthew 14:31)
