Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights      James 1:17

Our finest gifts we bring to lay before the King

The Little Drummer Boy” (originally known as “Carol of the Drum“) was written by the American composer and teacher Katherine Davis, in 1941. It has been recorded by hundreds of artists over the years. (How many will admit the childlike fun of singing Pa rum pum pum pum?)

As we face a Christmas unlike any other, as we get trapped in thinking of what will be different for us this year, as we are tempted to focus on what won’t be, let us instead be grateful for the gifts God has given us. Then, turn the gratitude outward and remember those whose lives are dark, those who have not heard the Good News of Christ our Lord. Let us take the time to give Christ a gift—the gift of our compassion to the needy, of love for our enemies, of our patience when things don’t go smoothly, of our time and talents in the service of God’s kingdom. Make a pledge to limit ‘the doing’ and focus on ‘the being’ in love and gratitude with all of God’s children.

This year, let’s focus on being the peace, love and joy that honors the light of the world. We can let our lives and actions be a gift to Christ. What gift will you bring to the King?
