Midweek meditation
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matthew 7:22-23
Can you imagine the fear and confusion hearing these words spoken to you? I can. Jesus is clearly saying that some of those who did good things in his name will be chased away and that is terrifying.
What do you want from me Lord? Just tell me and I’ll do it. I have thought and heard others share these type of thoughts so often in life. Then we are dissatisfied when we don’t hear a direct answer.
The trouble with this entire way of thinking is the underlying assumption that we have the ability to work our way into God’s grace. In the above verses Jesus is clearly speaking to those who believe they have been ‘good enough’ and should be rewarded for their deeds.
Jesus said all we are to do is come to Him. To beHis,to rest securely in His arms. To acknowledge that we are not in control, that we can never be good enough to earn his love but that we never have to. His love is offered without price. Thanks be to God!
