Midweek meditation
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:4
Jesus is reminding us that on our own, apart from him, we will accomplish nothing worthwhile. How often does our pride get in the way of accepting that we just can’t do it on our own, that we are not the architect of our own life.
We are dependent on God. Which should be a relief! To know we don’t need to rely just on our own strength and ability, to have the backing of the great I am should make life less stressful. Instead, we struggle against this. We want to take credit and receive accolades. We want to be self-sufficient. We are not.
I’d like to suggest we start every day with a celebration of our own insufficiency.
We need to develop respect for humility and reject arrogance. We must change the world by first allowing God to change us. We need a daily reminder of our dependence on God in order to live fully into the vine of Jesus Christ.
