Midweek meditation
Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants… Mark 4:30-32
What does it mean that the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed?
The historical evidence of this is clear. From an unknown individual named Abraham to a small band of nomads seeking land, to the son of a carpenter who gathered a group of disciples from the backwaters of an empire, God’s work has not been focused on the mighty.
But there is an individual implication for each of us also. Too often we seek big results; big events, big opportunities, big impact. We value our service only when others can see it. We forget that God’s work begins small.
Too many people feel useless because they don’t have a big, visible role in God’s community. We forget that God is the master of small steps. We discount the importance God places on mustard seed service.
You can change a life today. Make a phone call, send a card, give a kind word, offer a glass of water – share hope and joy. The doors of God’s kingdom swing on small hinges. Nothing is too small to be significant and we have no idea what might grow into something huge.
May you know your importance and see your witness today through tiny acts for God.
