Midweek meditation
Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter
Exodus 20:8-10
Dear Friends,
Taking a Sabbath is a sacred responsibility. It is a gift to God, from God and for our own spirituality. We need the time to connect with God and listen for the Spirit in our life. But in today’s culture, how do we find time to “keep it holy?” Our technology allows us to be working 24/7. Even if we haven’t brought our job home, the stay at home order has increased the pressure put on us and what we put on ourselves.
The key to the Sabbath isn’t merely rest. Rather, it’s that in our rest we turn our attention to God. We need to set apart time truly given over to the Spirit. Without it our health suffers, our productivity declines and our faith is weakened. We must re-teach ourselves to take a Sabbath.
What will you do to honor our Creator, to find the time to be in stillness and hear the Spirit? It begins with admitting we were not made to do everything, and accepting the world will continue to function even if we are not available.
Take time to unplug, rest, exercise, spend time outdoors, pray or meditate, time alone, sitting still, reading and focused time with family. May you find a true sense of Shabbat shalom, Sabbath peace.
